Khuzani leads a Maskandi-heavy lineup

Khuzani is the main draw. The Maskandi star is known for powerful vocals and high-energy sets, and hits like “Umjolo Lowo” tend to turn stadium crowds into one big choir. Fans commenting on the festival’s recent posts have already crowned him “inkosi yomaskandi ebusayo”, the king of Maskandi on stage.

MC Kawosiyane joins him under her “Queen of Culture” banner, and Lungelo, also known as Jumbo Lungelo, brings the soulful melodies that have made him a festival favourite. Organizers count more than 30 artists on the bill in total, with names still rolling out on the festival’s Instagram page. The event is run by the Glebelands Community Residential Units and honours a late figure who spent his career opening doors for Maskandi artists.

It lands in a busy Maskandi October. The genre also runs festivals this month in Kempton Park and at Mbekweni Stadium in Paarl, but Umlazi’s edition is the one with stadium scale in KZN.

Tickets and where to buy

Tickets sit across three flat tiers: R100 for general, R150 for Golden Circle and R500 for VIP. No phased pricing or booking fees have been mentioned, so the shelf price is what you pay.

Buy at Shoprite, Checkers and Usave stores or through ViTickets. No online ticketing page has gone live yet, so the in-store route or the organizer line on 072 487 5357 are the reliable options. Gate sales on the day haven’t been confirmed either, so don’t bank on paying at the door.

King Zwelithini Stadium and getting there

The festival moved off its original Glebelands Stadium footprint to King Zwelithini, a 10,000-capacity grass bowl off Griffiths Mxenge Highway in Umlazi D. The ground was renovated to FIFA standard around the 2010 World Cup, so there are proper stands and more room than the original venue could offer.

A few listings still doing the rounds show this festival in September at Glebelands Stadium. Those are outdated. The confirmed date is Saturday 10 October at King Zwelithini Stadium.

Plan for a busy Durban Saturday. Maskandi Fest runs the same day in Greyville and the Top 8 cup final kicks off at Moses Mabhida at 18:00, so roads into and out of Umlazi will be thick late afternoon. Arriving for the 12:00 start is the easy fix.

Comments under the festival’s posts are pure KZN confidence, with fans posting “sobe sikhona”, we’ll be there, alongside heart emojis. No complaints or drama have surfaced so far, just people counting down.

If you’re in Durban or anywhere in KZN and want a full day of Maskandi for the price of a couple of rounds, this is your Saturday. Get to Shoprite or Checkers this week and pick up your R100 ticket before the weekend rush.
