Aero Manyelo’s form going in

Aero Manyelo, real name Chobolo Manyelo, has been part of the South African house fabric since 2008. His family moved from Zebediela in Limpopo to Ivory Park when he was five, he studied sound engineering on a Soul Candi bursary, and BlackwHole Entertainment released his first EP, Herbal Island, soon after. Early single “Mexican Girl” caught Oskido’s ear and landed on one of the veteran DJ’s compilation albums, and he went on to form Manyelo Dafro with fellow producer Dafro.

He arrives in Newtown with fresh material. “Be Mine”, his collaboration with house pioneer DJ Mbuso, has been drawing attention from deep house listeners across the continent, and his guest mix for Get Physical Radio aired on October 2. Expect a set that swings between soulful deep house and harder Afro-tech edges, the lane he’s worked for most of his career.

Bad Manors suits that range. The bar started out in a grand old manor under entrepreneur Chris Van Den Berg, did stints in Illovo and Parkhurst, and now holds court inside the Carfax precinct.

Its musical policy stretches from speed garage to house and Afro-tech, and the courtyard, home to chicken wings, the signature burger and Drunken Horse Gin cocktails, gives nights there a house-party feel rather than an arena one. The venue also runs Detention Radio’s Night School on first Thursdays, so the decks get a proper weekly workout.

Tickets and getting there

Once the listing goes live, it’ll most likely sit on Quicket or a similar platform, which is where Bad Manors nights usually sell. Most events at the venue are 18-plus, so bring an ID. The fastest way to catch the drop is the venue’s Instagram, @badmanorsjozi, where upcoming events get posted first. We’ll update this listing as soon as ticket details land.

One thing worth planning around: Back to the City Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown on the same Saturday. The precinct will be busy from the afternoon, with heavy foot traffic and tight parking around Gwi Gwi Mrwebi Street, so ride-hailing or a drop-off beats driving in and hunting for a bay.

If you’re mapping out the rest of the month, the OOR Outdoor Experience at Yard 512 in Midrand is another Gauteng option this October, and Cape Town readers can look ahead to The Groove Room at Cabo Beach in December.

Afro-house and Afro-tech fans who prefer their parties up close should keep October 10 open, with the caveat that finer details are still pending. The move right now is to follow the venue’s Instagram and save the date, then move quickly once tickets surface.
